Why Your Best Communications Strategy is a Story from Your Desk

If you want to move people, change minds, or lead a company, you need to know one thing: stories are the single most effective tool you have for sharing your message with the world.

Data is great for reports, but stories are what people actually remember. As a media and presentation coach working with leaders in Singapore, the rest of Asia and the Middle East, I see an incredible opportunity: brilliant people have a wealth of experience, but they often just need the right spark to share it. Instead of relying only on “corporate speak,” the most impactful leaders are the ones who lean into their own unique journey.

The “View from Your Desk”

The most powerful stories aren’t the ones you find in a textbook. They are the ones that happen at your desk, in your meetings, and during your most pivotal moments. They are stories that only you can tell because you were the one in the room.

Take a look at how Mark Carney, the former head of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, describes the 2008 financial crisis. He doesn’t just talk about interest rates. He tells a story about being with a group of world-class central bankers while the massive firm Bear Stearns was collapsing.

He describes them sitting there, drinking fine wine, trying to decide what to do next. It’s a great story because it’s a bit fun—the image of “fine wine” during a crisis—but it’s also incredibly insightful. It gives you a “bird’s eye view” of his world. You instantly understand his role, his pressure, and his authority because he invited you into that room with him.

The Power of Authenticity

Sharing the view from your desk is what can make you truly shine as a leader.

Your audience doesn’t just want the facts; they want to know what it felt like to be you in that moment. They want to connect with your vision.

How to Use Your Stories

When I work with executives on their media presence, we focus on unlocking these “fine wine” moments—those specific details that prove your expertise and show your character.

  • Find the human detail: What was the mood in the room?
  • Keep it simple: You don’t need complex language to describe a profound moment.
  • Own your seat: There is immense power in saying, “From where I was sitting…”

Whether you are in a boardroom, speaking on a panel or doing a media interview, remember: your message is only as strong as the story you use to carry it. When you speak from your desk, you aren’t just giving information—you’re providing leadership.
